Social Bookmarking Plan

Well, I just signed up for a Twitter account. I’ve been hesitant about this for years. However, after reading Chapter 6 in Will Richardson’s Blogs, Wikis, Podcasts, and Other Powerful Web Tools for Classrooms, I finally gained enough knowledge (and courage 🙂 ) to comfortably move forward.

My goal in using Twitter is twofold. First, I’d like to gain enough expertise to use it for myself and to build a collaborative network with my colleagues. Second, I’d eventually like to use it in the classroom. I posted a link a few days back to Ms. Cassidy’s Classroom Blog http://mscassidysclass.edublogs.org/. I was very impressed that this first grade classroom in Saskatchewan, Canada, had their very own classroom Twitter account. This really sparked my interest into how a social site could be used in elementary education and be safe and successful.

So, I’ve decided that to fulfill the first part of my goal in using Twitter for education, I am going to create a network of some friends and colleagues to join me on Twitter. I thought that we could all follow each other with the goal of expanding our educational resources. For example, I’d like to build a list of resources for speech-language pathology that would cover all areas of learning for school-based elementary aged students. Each one of my colleagues and myself would need to start “tweeting” sites and links to blogs and websites where this information can be found.  Not only will we have built a great resource site, but we will be actively connected to each other should we need quick advice or assistance.

Learning Via RSS

What a week! It has been a challenge for me this week as I strive to advance my knowledge of using blogs and RSS feeds as powerful online tools for education. I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t feeling like a fish out of water! After many hours of reading and experimenting with different web tools, I’ve come to realize that my understanding is not going to increase until I keep practicing using these tools over and over again. So, that’s what I’ve been doing. I might not be an expert yet, but I am trying. 🙂

Right now, I am focusing on using RSS feeds to advance my learning and knowledge of school-aged speech-language pathology and in finding educational resources for homeschooling online. I have set up some search feeds in my Google Reader for these terms and I have also subscribed to some specific blogs that I have found to be extremely resourceful.

Once I have become comfortable enough using RSS on my own, I’d like to start using it with my students. I am really amazed at how easy it is to bring the read/write web to me! Using RSS is going to be a great resource for finding information for research papers or unit studies that we will be completing.

Student Blogging Project

I found a great classroom blogging site today (http://mscassidysclass.edublogs.org/) that helped me understand how to engage younger students (6 and 7 year olds) in using Web 2.0 technologies in the classroom. Since I currently work with elementary aged students ranging in age from 5 to 9 years old, I was really excited to see how the classroom teacher was able to get younger students to participate in posting pictures of their work as well as written reflections. I was really impressed that this classroom blog even has their own Twitter account!

Hello World!

This post marks a momentous time in my life and my career. This is my very first blog.  As a speech-language pathologist who has been removed from the public school setting now for eight years, I am unable to collaborate with other teachers and professionals on a daily, face-to-face basis.  I now work in private practice and as a private tutor. I miss the daily collaboration of bouncing ideas back and forth and learning from others’ experiences. I am hoping that through this blog, I can make connections that will allow me to fill this void.

Although I don’t have a network of professionals and friends to talk with daily, I have been able to keep in touch with many of my former colleagues online. Most of this communication has been very basic, with email being my primary resource used. With the smart phones of today, email communication is a lot faster than it used to be when you had to log in to your computer each time and check your mail, so I’m thankful for that. Still, I know that there are even better communication tools out there and I really look forward to learning more about them so that I can incorporate them into my educational routine.

As a private tutor, I am very interested in creating a blog for my students. My goal is to advance my knowledge and my students’ knowledge so that we can incorporate blogging into our language arts curriculum, while also increasing our computer and web literacy.

I hope to incorporate tools such as wikis, social networks-such as Facebook and Twitter, and RSS feeds into my site soon.  My students have been taught about Wikipedia and we have all used it, but I’d really like to learn how to create and use my own wikis in the classroom.  As for Facebook or Twitter, I’m still really hesitant about their use in the educational setting, but look forward to hearing how others have successfully incorporated them for learning so that I can learn from their experiences.
